The release of jailed Chinese Nobel Peace laureate Liu Xiaobo "is desirable,"
Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan told parliament Thursday.

"From the viewpoint that universal human rights should be protected across
national borders, it is desirable" that Liu be released, Kan said in a response
to questions by an opposition upper house lawmaker.
